Ilustrativne fotografije često se koriste u marketingu i medijima, a iako mogu biti vrlo učinkovita zamjena zamjena originalnim fotografijama, generičke fotografije ponekad su toliko apsurdne da nije jasno što se točno želi reći.
Taj apsurd istaknuli su korisnici Twittera koji su na društvenim mrežama podijelili generičke fotografije koje bi trebale ilustrirati njihova zanimanja. Među takvim fotografijama našle su se ''znanstvenice'' koje provode eksperimente u laboratoriju u traper jakni, marketinški stručnjaci koji nose laptop i poslovno odijelo na plažu, biolozi koji škaricama režu makete DNA...
